Chapter Fourteen

We hop in my Jeep and I take off driving much faster than I normally do, trying to race to the hospital. Mina places a hand on my knee.

“Baby, slow down. You don’t want to wreck trying to get there.”

I take a few deep breaths trying to slow down and calm down. We park at the emergency room entrance and sprint across the parking lot. Meg has just pulled up in front of the emergency room entrance and looks over startled at our urgent heavy steps on the pavement. Seeing us running towards her, relief washes over her face. She runs to the passenger side.

“Riley, help me support him so we can get him inside.”

We get to the other side and Mina steps in front us, holds her arms out, and blocks us.

“No, stop. Go get a nurse and wheel chair. He’s going into shock and should not stand up or he may lose consciousness.”

Meg runs into the hospital, leaving us alone with Travis. My heart is racing and I feel like I’m going to break down crying again. Travis is pale and slightly shaking. Mina presses her hand to his forehead.

“He’s cold. He’s losing too much blood.”

She lifts his shirt, and seeing he’s wearing a belt, she takes it off and tightens it around his thigh. There’s a small umbrella on the floor board under his feet that she uses to make a quick tourniquet. Travis moans and groans in pain as the leather tightens around his thigh. I can’t even look at his leg because it looks so bad.

A male nurse comes rushing over with a wheel chair and locks the chair in place just outside the car door.

“Ok, give me some room.”

We back up and he effortlessly lifts Travis out of the car and places him in the wheelchair. He unlocks the wheels and starts rushing towards the hospital. We keep pace with him, but when he’s pressing the power door button on a second set of doors, he holds up a hand.

“I’m sorry, but this is as far as you can go. Only family can come beyond this point. Someone will let you know when he’s allowed visitors. Don’t worry, we’ll take care of your friend.”

We watch Travis being wheeled away and I start to feel only slightly less panicked. Meg rubs her hands nervously together.

“I’m uh, going to go park really fast. I’ll be back.”

I turn to Mina slightly shaking still.

“Mina, he didn’t look good.” She rubs my shoulders and gently kisses my lips. “He’ll be ok. Meg really should have called an ambulance. He probably wouldn’t have lost as much blood if she had called for help. The biggest concern is an infection. They’ll probably keep him for observation for a few days to make sure an infection doesn’t set in.”

When Meg gets back, we stand around in awkward silence for several minutes before Jax comes rushing through the doors looking frantic.

“Where is he? Is he ok?” I motion towards the double doors. “They took him back, but we weren’t allowed back with him because we’re not family.
